Where are you based?  And do I need to be local to work with you?
I'm located in Northern Baltimore County, Maryland.  I frequently travel to clients and that is always an option.  I'm here because my family is here, my farm is here and the Millwork shop is here.  I have developed a system to quickly and efficiently gather measurements of a space (and you can too!) so that we can communicate design intentions from near or far - whatever is the most effective method.

Do you have an office?

I do!  It's located in Railroad, Pennsylvania.  Our office and showroom is also connected to Freestate Millworks, so if you'd like to pay us a visit, let us know!  We could even put you up.

What kind of projects do you take on?

We are a full service Interior Design Studio that focuses primarily on projects that require some level of customization through construction - renovation or new build.  We are not decorators, meaning we don't typically take on projects that focus solely on paint colors and furnishings (but we are happy to connect you with designers who do!)

Are you a Design / Build firm?  We are looking for a Contractor.

Technically, no.  But it depends on the project.  While we don't actually do the physical work of construction, we create the road map and connect you with the necessary trades to get the job done.  All full service clients receive a detailed Scope of Work at the end of a design phase to better communicate with your builder - and we're happy to walk it through with them as well.  Need a contractor?  We can suggest one or help you find one.  We also offer a project management phase to ensure the execution of the design in the renovation process.

What does full service mean?

A quick breakdown of the process will help answer this question best;

  1.      Design Phase - this is where we create the overall vision with conceptual drawings, specified finishes and materials.

  2.      Construction Planning & Budgeting - the Scope of Work, walkthroughs with trades and breaking down the budget of Construction and FF&E.

  3.      Procurement & Project Management - we'll handle the ordering process which includes storing, managing deliveries and getting it to the jobsite.

  4.      Staging and Finishing  - getting the furniture and final details installed.

I've never hired a Designer.  What is the cost?

All projects are unique.  This is why I like to start the process with an initial consultation.  This allows us to walk the space, take any necessary photos and measurements and better understand what it is you're hoping to achieve.  Once we've had a chance to meet, a proposal for design services will be sent to you breaking down the scope of work, general timeline and cost of the services.

Why hire a Designer?

If you've ever endured a renovation on your own, this question could be easily answered.  Not only does a designer have the insight and access to materials, products and skilled artisans to pull off unique ideas that accomplish your goals but they are a major player on your team.  From procurement (and the inevitable hours dealing with customer service) to project management, we stay with you through the renovation process to ensure that the design is implemented and executed exactly as intended.

What is the connection with Freestate Millworks?

Freestate Millworks is a custom cabinetry shop run by Jason House (my brother).  The R.HL office is connected to the shop so I'm able to oversee and manage projects with ease.  More importantly, I'm able to see the build process come to life and better manage details as they happen.  While 99% of the custom millwork on our projects runs through his shop, it is not a requirement.   But... have you seen his work?

I just want to know what <material / paint color> you used.  How can I find out?

Check out the Portfolio, select the project and click on "Source Guide" (Coming soon!)  If you can't find it there, check Pinterest!

Did I see you on TV?

It's possible!  There are a few episodes out there worth checking out;

  1. Magnolia Network's "In With The Old" - Season 1, Episode #2: The Creek House: Railroad, PA

  2. Magnolia Network's "Two's Company Design" - I recommend Episode #2: Brick Farmhouse in the Country

  3. Magnolia Network's "Stone House Revival" -  Season 4

  4. HGTV's "Saving America" - Two Episodes (that was forever ago!  You didn't really see this, did you?)

What happened to OAK Design Project?

OAK was a previous venture with another partner.  We have since decided to part ways and are taking on clients through our independent companies.
